O periodonto é composto pelos tecidos que sustentam os dentes nos ossos maxilares. Inclui o osso que fixa os dentes, suspensos por um sistema de fibras, e o tecido gengival que cobre esta estrutura externamente.
Os problemas periodontais envolvem inflamação no periodonto, que pode levar à destruição dos tecidos de suporte, ao afrouxamento dos dentes e, eventualmente, à perda dentária.
Nos estágios iniciais, pode não haver retração gengival, o que é enganoso, pois o osso de suporte já pode estar a deteriorar-se.
Importante: problemas periodontais não são sinónimo de “gengivas encolhidas”.
Muitas vezes os problemas periodontais são assintomáticos nas fases iniciais, o que atrasa o diagnóstico. A recessão gengival surge normalmente em estágios avançados.
Sinais de alerta comuns:
Como os sintomas são subjetivos e discretos até fases moderadas, são essenciais os check-ups periódicos para deteção precoce.
Durante o exame, utiliza-se uma sonda periodontal para verificar a mobilidade, sangramento ou bolsas periodontais profundas (sinais de perda óssea subjacente).
Estas bolsas podem acumular placa bacteriana, tártaro e bactérias.
Radiografias dentárias ajudam a identificar mesmo pequenas perdas ósseas.
O tratamento exige uma abordagem abrangente, começando por:
Procedimentos não cirúrgicos
Raspagem e polimento: limpeza profunda da superfície dentária
Curetagem fechada: remoção de depósitos e bactérias das bolsas gengivais (geralmente com anestesia local)
Antibióticos podem ser prescritos, dependendo da gravidade
Procedimentos cirúrgicos (em casos avançados)
Curetagem aberta: exposição da gengiva para limpeza profunda e possível regeneração óssea
Para manter a saúde das gengivas, recomenda-se:
Limpezas profissionais e revisões a cada 3–6 meses
Escovagem adequada e uso de fio dentário ou escovas interdentárias
Evitar o tabagismo, que agrava os problemas periodontais e reduz a eficácia do tratamento
Parar de fumar ou reduzir o consumo melhora significativamente os resultados
Não.
Estudos demonstram uma forte ligação entre doenças periodontais e condições sistémicas.
Sendo uma condição inflamatória, pode agravar outras inflamações, como no caso da diabetes.

Keve Horváth joined our team of dental technicians. He works in the Ceramic Department as a master ceramist. After he graduated in 1994, he furthered his knowledge from several symposiums in Hungary, Germany and Belgium (for example Noritake and Ivoclar). In 2006 he held a course „Esthetic Front” with a real patient presence, which is a special event in Hungary and also in Europe.
